Changelog
Every change to the data is recorded here. Removals and corrections are listed as plainly as additions.
1.1 — every row checked against its source
- Removed three rows that could not be traced to a sound measured source: "Vagina, aroused depth" (a 1966 approximation taken with a speculum in place), "Average size men actually order" (a company officer's statement about condom choice, not anatomy) and "What men guess the average is" (the figure could not be found in the paper).
- Corrected the Veale 2015 percentiles: stretched 3rd 3.11″ → 3.81″, stretched 97th 6.90″ → 6.61″, erect 97th 6.50″ → 6.39″, flaccid 97th 4.76″ → 4.77″, with their girths recomputed. The erect average comes from 692 men, not 15,521.
- Corrected the micropenis threshold to the European Association of Urology definition, 2.5 SD below the mean, which is 8.5 cm (3.35″) on Veale's figures, not 9.3 cm.
- Corrected the condom rows to current specifications: TheyFit no longer exists, so the smallest and largest are now myONE 45C and 64M; the average condom is 180 mm × 53 mm (WHO/UNFPA); Magnum and Magnum XL are 180–200 mm at 55 mm and 58 mm.
- Corrected the stretched-length rows from a men's health clinic: the authors are Slade et al., not Samplaski, the measurement is bone-pressed, and the clinic is a men's health clinic, not a fertility clinic.
- Corrected citations and sample descriptions for Mostafaei 2025 (the 36,883 men are the whole review, not the Americas), Belladelli 2023 (20 studies, and the dispute over its inclusion criteria), Habous 2015, Salama 2015, Promodu 2007 and Herbenick 2015 (vibrators and dildos).
- Relabelled Matt Barr's row as a claimed, unpublished measurement, at the 37 cm and 21.5 cm he reports.
- Labelled five rows as not checked against the original source (tier C): Chen 2000, the Sagami condom, Kinsey, and the two Bogaert & Hershberger self-reports.
- Added a DOI or source link to every checked row, except Matt Barr's, which has no published report to link.
1.0 — data separated from presentation
- All 54 curated rows moved into
data/measurements.csvwith full citation, source link where available, measurement convention, girth method and a confidence tier (A, B or C) for each. - Every dataset from calcSD's public list exported to
data/studies.csv. - Every row awaiting verification is tracked; the site does not launch until each one is resolved.
0.9 — the every-study view, and a removal
- Removed a row described as "a pharmacological study of 278 men" (13.73 cm). It could not be traced to any paper; the figure came from a secondary summary.
- Injection studies now named individually: Wessells 1996, Chen 2000, Habous 2015, Salama 2015.
- Corrected an earlier claim that injection studies "cluster tightly" around 5.2″. Named and complete, they span 5.07″ to 5.92″; part of that spread is measurement convention.
- Averages visually emphasised across all views.
- Added a fourth view: forest plots of every study publishing a mean and standard deviation, split by measurement type and convention.
0.8 — conventions made explicit
- Every row now states its measurement convention: bone-pressed, not bone-pressed, mixed, or not stated.
- Added the normalised-to-bone-pressed view.
- Added pooled stretched averages, bone-pressed and not, and the Western stretched bone-pressed average.
- Published the inclusion rule for what earns a row.
0.7 — calcSD data
- Added pooled erect averages, bone-pressed (5.51″) and not (4.78″).
- Added Habous 2015, the LifeStyles 2001 condom study and r/BigDickProblems self-reports.
0.6 — the other side of the fit problem
- Added resting and aroused vaginal depth, Mondaini 2002's surgery-seekers, the surgical girth ceiling, and regional extremes.
0.5 — preferences and comparisons
- Added best-selling and typical dildo dimensions.
- Added women's estimate of the average, computed from Prause 2015's released raw dataset.
- Added Bogaert & Hershberger's straight and gay self-reports.
- Declined to plot the smallest and largest partners from Prause 2015's Figure 4: the figure contains values outside the study's own stimulus range and cannot be decoded reliably.
0.4 — one list, two orders
- All rows merged into a single list sorted by length, plus a second view sorted by girth.
- Girth extrapolated for every row lacking a measured figure, with extrapolated bars drawn distinctly.
- Added Trojan Magnum XL and the narrowest mass-market condom.
0.3 — ranges and records
- Added clinical percentiles, the Kinsey average, the Belladelli temporal-trend figures and the largest medically verified measurement.
0.2 — true-to-scale girth
- Chart turned horizontal, with girth drawn at its real diameter.
- Added the fertility-clinic stretched lengths (4.84″ and 5.28″), condoms and preference data.
0.1 — origin
- Began from an AI-generated chart. Removed three of its bars as unsupported by any source: "porn industry minimum" (7.0″), "average male porn actor" (7.9″) and "typical buff athlete" (8.0″).
